Chassahowitzka River
The Chassahowitzka River known as The Chaz by the local's is a first-magnitude spring system located in Citrus County, Florida. This river is home to many different kinds of wildlife and was designated as Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge back in 1941. The Chaz has many different springs which are all interconnected via underwater caves that snorkelers can dive through. When you get further downstream more towards the gulf, tributaries feed into the Chaz mixing freshwater with salt. It's not uncommon to see spotted seatrout, snook, striped mullet, and redfish in this river.

The Chassahowitzka River Campgrounds area for RVs and Primitive camping are partially shaded. The campgrounds is loaded with oaks, cedars, palms, and pine trees. Wifi signal is all through the RV section. There are picnic tables at each campsite.

Springs on the Chassahowitzka River
The Chaz main spring head can be seen from the boat ramp when you first put your boat or kayaks into the river. Seven Sisters Spring is known for activities such as manatee viewing, canoeing, snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming. The Chaz 1 & 2 are two different springs that are shallow but a deep entrance to the springs where the water flows up and out. The only way to reach Crab Creek is from the boat ramp about 260 feet down the river because of the privately owned land surrounding the area. There are many spring vents in the spring basin which is 7-12 feet deep. Baird Spring also known as The Crack. It gets it name because of the 30 foot long crack at the bottom of the spring. Potters Creek Spring entrance is on the right side of the river and around a mile and a half down the river from the boat ramp. Salt Creek Springs gets it name from the salt water coming in from the gulf. Salt Creek is a bit harder to navigate so you must be becareful.
